OUR HISTORY
- Fountains in our village -
Washrooms and public fountains are infrastructures that exist in many of our villages, built by city councils and parish councils, especially in the 50s and 60s.
These were infrastructures that responded to the basic needs of the population, such as access to water supply, as well as adequate places to wash clothes.
At a time when few villages had electricity, wells were rare and those that existed were essentially intended for irrigation, with water extraction being done by traditional mills, powered by animal power or, later, by expensive oil engines. and not always efficient, standpipes play an important role in the daily lives of local populations.
Therefore, to supply water for day-to-day needs, there were mainly natural springs and mines, on the slopes of the hills, but these involved displacements for its transport, being a task as necessary as it was hard and difficult. At that time there were few houses with their own fountains, and especially those of the wealthier houses.
With the fountains, distributed in several places in each village, it became easier and more convenient to access this resource, which was a substantial improvement in the conditions of the people.
was in this mission that I decided to embrace this project, to help other people to (re)discover these places of public interest, and I founded Fontes de Portugal.
Welcome,
